Gas Sensors for Indoor Air Quality & Ventilation
Indoor air quality and ventilation has been paid to more concern after the long time pandemic of COVID-19. Besides the basic demand of comfortable temperature and humidity, the indoor air quality involves pollutants of particulate matters (PM2.5/10), volatile organic compounds(VOC), allergens; high concentration of CO2 and viruses spread are emerging problems drawing more attention of people. More and more governments have announced new regulations on indoor space air monitoring and ventilation.
In the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, In order to create the best indoor gymnasium environment, to ensure the normal performance of athletes and the comfort of spectators. A distributed multi-point monitoring system was installed in the closed sports venues. According to the indoor stadium environment, and effectively combine a variety of sensors, automatic monitoring and wireless technology to achieve monitoring the air quality, temperature, humidity, formaldehyde and CO2 parameters and realize the regulation of ambient parameters by controlling the humidifier and ventilation fan.
In 2022, the Belgium government has finally agreed on a “ventilation plan” for all places open to the public, such as bars, restaurants, cinemas, theatres and gyms, reports The Brussels Times. One of the main lessons of the pandemic – the importance of healthy indoor air – should be carried into the future, not only in the fight against Covid-19, but also to avoid other respiratory diseases such as the flu, real-time carbon dioxide levels -- an indicator that assesses how much fresh air is getting in indoors. Published in July 2022, the regulation is the boldest step yet by countries to make indoor environments safer in response to infectious diseases such as COVID-19 and influenza.
Other governments like USA and UK also started projects or regulations on clean air in buildings. School buildings are one of the typical sites to spread seasonal flu, and the closed rooms have increased CO2 concentration which cause feeling of dull, dizzy, headache and unable to concentrate. Air quality monitoring device including CO2 detector/ meter was required to install in the buildings and alarm for ventilation. CO2 concentration is regarded as one of the most important indicator of air quality in buildings. Therefore, more and more air conditioner manufacturers and HVAC device suppliers start to add CO2 sensor to their products.
Indoor air CO2 concentration levels:
- CO2 concentration below 700ppm, the air is fresh, and people will feel comfortable.
- CO2 concentration 700ppm to 1000ppm, it is still normal.
- The 1500ppm range is critical, and the air is polluted with the concentration continue to increase, most people will feel uncomfortable.
Since the fresh air system entered the Chinese market in the 1990s, the Chinese fresh air system has mainly experienced the rapid development and the market integration. On the current, the development direction of fresh air has changed from solving smog, air purification to air management and air solutions. Integrated and intelligent solutions are also boosting the development of the comfortable and safe indoor air management.
As a detection device, the sensor plays an important role in information transmission, processing, storage, display, recording and control. It is also a fundamental and important part in the process of realizing the intelligent control of the fresh air system. It is common to add the sensors to the host system for direct linkage control. Through the pre-setting of various parameters, functions such as automatic start and stop of the fan and adjustment of the air volume can be realized. Besides, the sensors can also made into an independent detector for real-time display, and reach then linkage control with fan through wireless connection. Single rooms can be operated to avoid power waste when some rooms are empty, which has wide use in kindergarten, schools, hospital and building offices.
For HVAC and air conditioner applications, Winsen has developed NDIR CO2 sensors, temperature humidity sensor, particles sensor, CH2O sensor, integrated air quality sensor modules, etc. Which are able to meet the green building standards of RESET and WELL.
